Vivien Leigh's Gone with the Wind dress to auction at Heritage

A dress worn by Vivien Leigh in Gone with the Wind (1939) is valued at $100,000-150,000 at Heritage Auctions.

The lot is to lead a sale of entertainment and music memorabilia in Beverly Hills on April 18-19.

Leigh Gone Wind
Leigh's performance in Gone with the Wind is considered one of the greatest in cinema history

Heritage comments that the dress was "worn by the actress as 'Scarlett O'Hara' in four pivotal scenes: when she's dictating how the 'Wilkes & Kennedy' sign is being placed on the building, when she encounters 'Rhett Butler' [Clark Gable] in the 'What a woman!' scene, when she gets attacked in Shanty Town, and then when she's at home as her husband 'Frank Kennedy' [Carroll Nye] decides to take some action".

It's one of the most important pieces of memorabilia from the film ever to have come up for auction.

Gone with the Wind is one of the highest grossing films of all time (when adjusted for inflation it remains at the top of the blockbuster lists) and is regarded as one of the greatest achievements in the history of cinema.

Leigh's hugely memorable role as Scarlett, combined with the relative rarity of Gone with the Wind memorabilia, is likely to ensure a strong sale.

In 2013, a negligee worn by Leigh onscreen made $56,250 at Bonhams.

A suit worn by Clark Gable in his role as Rhett Butler is also offered, with a valuation of $30,000-50,000.
