Amy Winehouse's Arrogant Cat dress auctions for $73,000

The black and white Arrogant Cat-labelled dress worn by late British soul singer Amy Winehouse in the music video for her single Tears Dry On Their Own sold for £47,475 ($73,206) yesterday (June 26).

Amy Wine House Back to Black dress
Winehouse wore the dress on three notable occasions during 2007. In the month following her death in 2007, Back To Black became the biggest selling album in the UK in the 21st Century

Estimated to be worth £25,000, the sleeveless cotton dress sold at Christie's London with a 90% increase - testament to the star's enduring popularity, as well as the frequency with which Winehouse donned the mini-skirted garment.

Mere days after her marriage to former video production assistant Blake Fielder-Civil in May 2007, Winehouse wore the dress during the making of the music video for the fourth single released from her critically acclaimed album Back to Black.

On May 24, 2007, Winehouse chose to wear the dress for another high-profile appearance - the Ivor Novello Awards in central London, where the notoriously unpredictable pop star was awarded Best Contemporary Song for Rehab.

Having tiptoed to the microphone, Winehouse commented: "Thank you all very much, I didn't even have time to get drunk, I've only been here about 15 minutes."

Winehouse donned the dress again the next day, during her homecoming concert at Shepherd's Bush Empire, which had been postponed twice due to "unforeseen circumstances".

Despite her sober protestations the night before, Winehouse appeared severely inebriated, muttering and slurring between songs, yet her vocal performance was roundly praised.

In November 2007, the concert was released on DVD - the gingham dress features on the cover.

Winehouse passed away on July 23, 2011 aged just 27.

In November 2011, the dress worn by Winehouse on the cover of her Back to Black LP sold for £43,200 ($67,208), while the robe she wore during the video for the smash hit which launched her career, Rehab, made $34,375 in June 2012.

The sale of Winehouse's London house aside, the present Arrogant Cat dress is the most valuable item of Amy Winehouse memorabilia to cross the auction block.
