A 1963 Martin D-28 acoustic guitar Bob Dylan played onstage at a number of events throughout the late 1960s and 1970s is heading to auction in Dallas.
It’s set to star in Heritage Auctions’ November 11 Entertainment and Music Memorabilia Signature Auction with an estimate of more than $300,000.
Dylan switched allegiance from Martin to Gibson in the late 1970s
It was Dylan’s primary guitar for his set at George Harrison’s 1971 Concert for Bangladesh, as well as during the 1975-1976 Rolling Thunder Revue Tour.
The lot is consigned from the collection of guitar tech Larry Cragg.
In 1977, Dylan switched his allegiance from Martin to Gibson and offered Cragg the chance to buy this specimen.
Heritage Auctions comments: “According to Cragg, he has kept the guitar in a humidity-controlled environment, with loosened strings for the forty years it's been in his possession, and it has not been played since it was wielded by Bob Dylan in 1977.
“This is a veritable treasure for the Dylan faithful, and a piece of music history.”
In 2013, Dylan’s Fender Stratocaster (played in his first electric set at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965) achieved a Dylan record $965,000 at Christie’s.
Among the other highlights of the sale will be John Lennon’s personal copy of the Beatles’ infamous Butcher Album, which is expected to make around $100,000.
