Elvis Presley's army uniform to bring $20,000+ at Heritage Auctions

Elvis Presley's US army uniform will be sold as part of Heritage Auctions' highly anticipated August 10 Entertainment and Music Memorabilia Signature Auction in Dallas.

The jacket, trousers and hat will auction with a $20,000+ estimate, as they join a premier selection of memorabilia from music and film.

Also featuring is the lowest-numbered copy of the Beatles' White Album and the original prototype of the GI Joe doll.

Elvis served in the US army from March 1958 to March 1960. The "summer dress greens" date to 1960, the final months of his service.

At the height of his powers, it was initially thought that Elvis would avoid being inducted into the army, but he nonetheless reported for duty on March 24, 1958 - a day dubbed "Black Monday" by his fans and the press.

From September 1958 onwards he was posted in Germany, where he was allowed to live off base with his family. He spent the rest of his service in the country.

It was while serving in the US army that Presley's mother died of a heart attack, an event from which he would never fully recover. He also became addicted to amphetamines, on the recommendation of a sergeant.

The uniform is complete with a letter of authenticity from Patsy Presley Geranen, Elvis' double first cousin, who worked as a secretary at Graceland.

One of the most publicised events of Elvis' army career was the cutting of his famous hair - Paul Fraser Collectibles has an authentic strand of hair from that very haircut, as well as two signed photographs of the star in uniform - see all three here.
