Album John Lennon signed for his killer to make $1.5m?

A copy of John Lennon’s Double Fantasy inscribed to his killer, Mark Chapman, is offered with an asking price of $1.5m at Moments in Time.

Chapman asked Lennon to sign the record as the star left his New York apartment for his studio at 5pm on December 8, 1980.

Lennon graciously did so and exchanged a few words before stepping into his car.

Chapman then hung around on the pavement until Lennon’s return at around 10:50pm.

As Lennon walked up to the door of his apartment building, Chapman shot him several times in the back. He then sat down by the side of the road to wait for the police.

This record was with him the entire time.

A spokesman for Moments in Time commented: "I have never come across a piece with such provenance; police reports, fingerprint documentation, letters from the District Attorney, it goes on and on."

The lot last sold for $150,000 in 1999.

While there have been some exceptional results for Lennon memorabilia in recent years, including the record $2.4m sale of his acoustic guitar in 2015, it remains to be seen whether this particular piece can achieve a tenfold increase on its last sale.

We have a great selection of John Lennon memorabilia for sale, including this autograph on a 1976 customs declaration.
