LA Woman lyrics auction for $95,500

A complete set of lyrics for the Doors song LA Woman, which were hand-written by late front-man Jim Morrison circa 1970, have sold for £61,875 ($95,411) as part of Christie's Pop Culture auction (June 26).

LA Woman - the title track on the Doors 1971 album of the same name - was released mere months before Morrison's death, aged 27, on July 3, 1971.

Although Morrison is alleged to have died from a heroin overdose, no autopsy was ever undertaken and controversy still swirls around the circumstances of his breaking on through to the other side.

The Doors lyrics
Debate has centered on the songs opening line, which Morrison mumbles slightly. Stephen Davis, in his book Life, Death, Legend, notes, when Morrison sings the first line a second time, he sings it as "Did a little downer bout an hour ago"

Another set of LA Woman lyrics appeared at auction in 2010. This incomplete set made a somewhat lowlier £13,000 ($19,868).

A page of notes in Jimi Hendrix's hand also put in a strong performance, making £31,250 ($48,188).

Jimi Hendrix song auction
The Hendrix song-poem was written at a pivotal moment in the rock star's career

Offered from the collection of Italian DJ Red Ronnie, the unfinished Woodstock poem features extensive substitutions and deletions, as well as Hendrix's first impressions of the now-historic American festival, including the observation: "Love is called to all…Music is magic…We came to gather….Danced with the pearls of rainy weather."

Of his collection, Red Ronnie comments: "I always like to say that music saved my life from loneliness.

"I first started collecting in 1990, since then I have always tried to collect items which tell the rock stars' own stories.

"The unpublished Woodstock poem was probably composed by Jimi during the [1969] festival at which Hendrix's legendary performance became a defining moment of the 1960s."
