Prince's Yellow Cloud guitar realises $137,000

One of Prince's Yellow Cloud guitars sold for $137,000 in a June 24 sale at Heritage Auctions in LA, soaring past an opening bid of $30,000.

Prince used it regularly both live and in the studio during the 1980s and 1990s.

Prince had the guitar made for him at a music store in Minneapolis

The star had it built to his own specifications at Knut Koupee music store in his home town of Minneapolis.

Garry Shrum, director of music memorabilia at Heritage Auctions, comments: "It's interesting to realize that Prince personally designed and commissioned this piece of art and it carries hallmarks of his famous 'Love Symbol', which he would adopt as his name during a famous contract dispute with Warner Bros. in the early 1990s.

"One glimpse and you have no doubt that this is Prince's guitar…

"As celebrity stage-used instruments go, this piece is as unique as Beethoven's piano or John Coltrane's saxophone."

The buyer was Jim Irsay, Indianapolis Colts owner and legendary memorabilia collector. He also bought Ringo Starr's drum kit for $2.2m earlier this year.

A lock of David Bowie's hair achieved $18,750.

The hair was collected in 1983 to help create the wig for Bowie's waxwork figure for Londond's Madame Tussauds museum.

Wendy Farrier, the wig mistress in question (and yes that is a real job title), kept the lock as she was a huge Bowie fan and has hung on to it ever since.
