Whitney Houston memorabilia leads Heritage entertainment sale

Heritage Auctions is set to offer a treasure trove of Whitney Houston memorabilia as part of its Entertainment & Music sale in Beverly Hills later this month.

More than 100 items will be offered directly from the Whitney Houston Estate, including the late singer's stage-worn costumes, awards and personal effects.

"Whitney Houston, still so widely beloved and venerated today, was the voice of her generation and the most highly awarded female vocalist in history," said Garry Shrum, consignment director for entertainment and music memorabilia at Heritage Auctions.

"This collection offers both fans and collectors a moving insight into her amazing talent and glamorous career."

Among the most fascinating personal items is the singer's passport, which she first used during her first international tour in 1985 and travelled the world with her until 1994. It is estimated at $2,000+.

Among Houston's many awards on offer are her 1993 Billboard Award for '#1 R&B Album' for The Bodyguard, estimated at $8,000+, and her Emmy Award for Saving All My Love for You as performed at the 1986 Grammys, estimated at $20,000+.

The collection also includes her stage-worn Dolce & Gabbana multi-coloured fur coat, and a pair of shoes gifted to her by the basketball legend Michael Jordan.

Back in June 2012, just a few months after Houston's untimely death, a Julien's Auctions sale saw several of the singer's outfits achieve strong prices. The Travilla dress she wore to the 1986 Grammy Awards quadrupled its top estimate to sell for $20,480, and her jewellery from the 2001 Academy Awards ceremony achieved $14,080 against an estimate of $1,000-$2,000.

However, the Heritage auction marks the first time major items have been offered for sale directly from her estate.

"We felt that it was time to give something of Whitney to the people who loved her and her music, and, conversely, who Whitney loved back with all of her heart and soul," said Pat Houston, Whitney's sister-in-law, manager and president of the Whitney Houston Estate.

The Heritage Auctions Entertainment & Music Signature Auction takes place on June 24-25.
