The 1840 2d was issued alongside the penny black

Line engraving was the method used in the production of early stamps. It was supplanted by surface printing (a technique still in use today) in 1870.

We have an exciting selection of rare stamps available, including this incredible mint block of penny blacks produced using the line engraving method.
