A 1938 $500 Straits Settlement crown pair has sold for $60,455 at a Spink Singapore stamp auction.
The lot led the August 17 sale of the Sentosa Collection of Straits Settlements, Malayan States, Labuan, North Borneo and Sarawak.

Straits Settlements refers to the region on the Malay Peninsula today known as Malaysia, Singapore and Southern Thailand. It came under the control of the British East India Company in the early 1820s.
In 1867 it became a crown colony and began to produce its own stamps. The present lot is from the final year of printing. The Japanese occupied the region in 1941.
The auction house described it as "a magnificent exhibition item and believed to be one of only two recorded pairs."
Other top selling lots included an 1873 cover displaying a Straits Settlements 1868 6c bright violet.
The lot was sent between Singapore and Hong Kong and exhibits a number of rare datestamps. The stamp has been cancelled by a circle of bars.
It sold for $42,674.
