Albert Hamilton Newfoundland stamp collection to sell at Spink

Spink is to offer stamps from the Albert Hamilton Newfoundland Collection in an auction on September 18.

The star looks set to be a rare 1919 “Hawker” Attempt stamp, a 3c brown overprinted “FIRST TRANS-ATLANTIC AIRPOST, April, 1919”.

Newfoundland Hawker stamps

Harry George Hawker unsuccessfully attempted to cross the Atlantic in a biplane

Newfoundland was a popular taking off point for early aviators as it was the part of the North American continent closest to Europe.

Pilot Harry George Hawker’s attempt to cross the divide ended in failure after nearly 15 hours in the air. He managed to ditch his plane close to a passing freighter.

Only 200 of these stamps were prepared, of which around 87 are unused.
