Australia Kangaroo imperforate block sells for $30,500

A block of six 1/2d stamps from Australia's famed "Kangaroo" first issue has sold at the top of Robert A Siegel Auction Galleries' dedicated sale, held on October 7 in New York.

The Kangaroo stamps were Australia's first issue, and are highly collectible today

The auction house offered the Goldfarm Collection of Australia Kangaroo and Map Series, which has a focus on interesting monogram singles and multiples from the nation's most famous issues.

The block of six 1/2d stamps is an error, with the bottom three completely imperforate between the stamps and sheet selvage where there should have been perforations. Of the four known monogram pieces bearing this error, only two remain in private hands.

It sold for $30,746.

Both of those have strong provenance, with the block at auction once housed in the famed Arthur Gray Collection, and another block - which sold in 2005 - formerly owned by Sir Gawaine Baillie.
