'One of the most important gems of Argentine philately' leads stamps auction

In a few weeks' time, Cherrystone auctions is to bring us a gargantuan sale, comprising 1715 lots of important stamps and postal history of the United States, British Commonwealth, Europe, Asia and South America.

Amongst the highlights are a number of French classics, German Colonies and World War II Occupation Issues, Italy and Italian Colonies issues, Russia and Soviet Union issues and Switzerland Cantonals including Double Geneva, Zurich and Basel Dove (on cover).

There are also some high quality large lots and collections.

Of particular interest will be multiples of Brazilian Bullseyes. As all philatelists will know, Bullseyes were the fourth type of adhesive stamp to be created after Britain's Penny Black/Twopenny Blue, the New York Dispatch and the Fours and Sixes of Zurich.

There are several multiples of the Bullseyes in the sale catalogued at $3,000-5,000 each.

A selection of items from the People's Republic of China are also in the sale - nothing at the very top end, but a section which investors will want to watch nevertheless given the recent performance of Chinese stamps, both Imperial and modern.

The best pieces are perhaps invert errors. Firstly a set of centre inverts from the United States 1869 Pictorials. Plate proofs on card, the 15c, 24c, 30c and 90c pieces all display bright colours and wide margins, and the whole lot is expected to bring $11,000.

Finally a fantastic Argentinean invert block, or rather a unique set of three sheet corner margin blocks of four, is likely to steal the show.

The stamp edition in question is the 1899-1908 Liberty Seated issue: centre invert blocks of the 1p blue & black, 5p orange & black and 10p green & black. Only 50 examples were ever issued of the first two, and only 25 of the 10 peso.

One of the most important sets of Argentinean philately, the fine-very fine pieces carry a somewhat modest estimate of $30,000, having been previously sold for $57,500 in a November 2008 sale.

Cherrystone Auctions' sale takes place on September 14-15 in New York.
