Aviation heroes glide into New York

Bloomsbury Auctions are holding a major Bibliophile sale next week which will see the sale of a rare first edition of TS Eliot's The Wasteland as well as a collection of astronauts' signatures including ones from Neil Armstrong and other moonwalkers.

However, those who are particularly interested in man's earliest attempts to defy gravity may be keener on the first two items on offer.

A TLS (Typed Letter Signed) from Charles Lindbergh to the Plymouth Congregational Church concerns a speech he was requested to give. The letter was written in 1949.

Lindbergh became famous in 1927 for his solo flight from New York to Paris. During the then recent Second World War, he had taken a substantial role in flying bombing missions, despite initially being sceptical about America entering the war.

An autographed envelope from Amelia Earhart is also on offer. The envelope was signed in 11 July 1932 and is accompanied by a photo of Earhart with her technical advisor Fred Noonan. The signing probably occurred whilst Earhart was at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Neither piece is expected to bring more than a couple of thousand dollars, but both Lindbergh and Earhart memorabilia are highly collectible, so either piece could make a worthwhile investment. The sale takes place on February 24, 2010.
