1887 Old Judge poster could see $100,000+ at Robert Edwards Auctions

An extremely rare 1887 N172 Old Judge baseball advertising poster is set to appear in Robert Edwards Auctions' (REA) inaugural Fall Auction, which will open this September.

The poster features images of some of baseball's earliest stars who appeared on what were the first widely distributed tobacco cards. It is in excellent condition and is one of just a few Old Judge advertising pieces known to exist.

"This is the first N172 Old Judge poster that REA has ever offered at auction," REA president Robert Lifson said. "We did sell one privately in 1991. That example was sold for $100,000."

Hall of Famers Tim Keefe, Jim "Orator" O'Rourke, Roger Connor, Sam Thompson, James "Pud" Galvin and Charles "Old Hoss" Radbourn are among the stars from the N172 Old Judge set featured on the poster.

A top-rated set of the T205 Gold Border tobacco cards will provide the second highlight of the sale. The Michael Wachs Collection has an overall set rating of near mint 7 from respected grading company PSA's Set Registry and contains 206 cards from the 1911 series.

Not only has the collection won Set Registry awards in each of the past several years, it has recently been inducted into the PSA Set Registry Hall of Fame. 112 of the 206 cards are the highest graded examples in PSA's record books.
