1908 Olympics judge's badge could see $1,500 in UK auction

A rare judge's badge from the London 1908 Olympics has been consigned to Richard Winterton Auctioneers' October 22 sale in the UK.

Judges' badges are some of the rarest memorabilia from the 1908 Games

Having spent much of its life languishing in a loft, the badge is now expected to sell for as much as £1,000 ($1,594). It is accompanied by a participation medal and programme from the historic event.

The medal and badge were both struck in Birmingham, UK by Vaughton Ltd, who currently supply Aston Martin and the Football League. Remarkably, the badge retains its original box.

The items can expect good results in the auction, after the London 2012 Olympics revived interest in collecting memorabilia from the Games.

The current record for any item of Olympic memorabilia is held by the Breal's Silver Cup from the first modern Games in 1896, which sold for $861,000 at Christie's in April 2012.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a range of sports memorabilia for sale.
