1916 Babe Ruth rookie card realises $552,000

Heritage Auctions sold a 1916 Babe Ruth rookie card for $552,000 on May 13.

The lot is the rare blank back variant.

Ruth began his career as a pitcher 

It was issued by New Orleans’ H Weil Baking Company in 1916, during Ruth’s barnstorming second season with the Boston Red Sox.

This specimen carries a grade of NM 7, making it the fourth best known. 

The top end of the baseball card market is enjoying significant growth, with prices rising dramatically over the past couple of years.
