1916 Weil Baking Babe Ruth card to surpass $120,000?

A 1916 Weil Baking Babe Ruth rookie card looks set to star at Heritage Auctions.

The much-coveted card is expected to make more than $120,000 at the sports memorabilia sale on May 14-16.

Babe Ruth Rookie
The 1916 Babe Ruth Rookie card was produced by the H Weil Baking Company

The cards were produced by the H Weil Baking Company in New Orleans during the early 20th century and are among the most sought after in the world.

Heritage comments: "The D329 Weil Baking brand is scarce. For the entire series, SGC has graded a total of only 247 cards. Of those, only 13 grade as high with six grading higher.

"This card has been graded SGC 60 EX 5. To date, a total of only four Ruth cards have been submitted to SGC and this is the highest graded of that precious group!

"Normally that is a huge selling feature but truth be told this card could be torn in two and tapped together and still be the crowning touch to any vintage collection.

"It is the perfect exemplar of a middle grade example of what can be called the most desired card within all the hobby."

The robe worn by Muhammad Ali prior to his first bout with Sonny Liston, in 1964, is also offered.
