1920s Babe Ruth photograph to auction at Heritage

The auction house comments that the image is "the work of one of the most esteemed sports photographers of the day, the great Paul Thompson, whose portraits of the great Bambino rank with the most coveted in this vibrant collecting subgenre.

"While advanced collectors could identify this as a Thompson from the obverse alone, the attribution is assured with his personal studio stamp on reverse.

"Also found here is a handwritten notation from Thompson himself, who writes, 'The traditional three bats for exercise matching the batsman he follows.'"

Other lots include a print of the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima in 1945.

Valued at more than $4,000, the image is among the most iconic of the second world war and provided the inspiration for the Marine Crop War Memorial in Washington DC.
