The Caulfield Cup is one of Australia's biggest races

Alongside the Melbourne Cup, the Caulfield Cup is one of Australia's biggest races. It has been held annually since 1879, with the prize fund this year topping $2.1m.

The 1931 winner, Denis Boy, was a five year old Irish bay. This was the second consecutive win at the event for his trainer.

Trophies from well-known races are popular collectors' items. In 2013, the 1783 Doncaster Cup made £32,450 ($49,661) at Christie's.

A portrait of 19th century jockey Fred Archer also sold well, achieving £6,000 ($9,182).

The lot was painted by the artist and model Rosa Corda.

The auction house comments: "Frederick James Archer was born in Cheltenham 11 January 1857. He was the outstanding jockey of his era and in a short career set a number records that would stand deep into the 20th century.

"This included 13 titles as Champion Jockey and 246 wins a season. One can only speculate what his final career statistics would have been had it not been for his tragic suicide aged just 29 on 8th November 1886."
