Andy Murray memorabilia: tennis star leads charity auctions

Items of Andy Murray memorabilia are the most popular lots at charity auctions, reports charity fundraising resource fundraising.co.uk.

Since Murray's Grand Slam and Olympic victories in 2012 and 2013, demand for his memorabilia has soared. A signed shirt worn during the final of the 2012 US Open sold for £15,000 ($23,436) in June while another shirt from his historic first Grand Slam triumph achieved £8,500 ($13,687) in December of last year.

Bidtech, a fundraising technology company, compiled the research. Factors taken into consideration included the average price that items from the celebrities had sold for in auctions over the past year, the number of bids each lot attracted and the degree to which items exceeded their estimated price.

Demand for Andy Murray memorabilia has soared in recent months

In April 2012, a piece of toast half eaten by the pop group's Niall Horan attracted bids of $100,000 on eBay, although the listing was swiftly taken down.

A spokesperson for Bidtech told the publication: "A celebrity's pulling power can be hugely beneficial to charities and the research shows how Andy Murray's recent achievements have afforded him a new level of fame and respect.

"Understandably, people want to own a little piece of his legend and charities are able to capitalise on this fact."
