Antiques Roadshow FA Cup valuation hits $1.4m+

The UK version of the Antiques Roadshow has valued the FA Cup trophy used between 1911 and 1991 at over £1m ($1.4m).

One of the show's resident experts, Alastair Dickenson, carried out the valuation at Harrogate's Royal Hall.

This version of the FA Cup was used for over 80 years

Dickenson explains in the programme: "Now I may be banned from every football ground in the country for saying this, but I suspect that this may have been an off-the-shelf piece, that it may not be specifically made.

"I think that because it has all these grapes and vines on it, it might have been a wine or champagne cooler.

"The hardest thing of all about this is putting a value on it. This is, alongside the Wimbledon trophy, the most famous cup in the country.

"I think, quite comfortably, this has got to be worth well over £1m ($1.4m) - the highest ever value I have given on Antiques Roadshow."

The trophy was the third FA Cup in rotation and the longest serving. It's unlikely ever to be sold.

The second (used from 1896-1910) realised £478,000 ($690,221) at Christie's in 2005. It has since been donated to the National Football Museum in Manchester.
