Babe Ruth baseball glove realises $100,000

A baseball glove used by Babe Ruth during the 1920s has sold for $100,000 at Saco River Auctions.

The lot was the star of TV talk show host Joe Franklin's collection, which crossed the block on April 1.

Franklin was the longest running TV talk show host of all time.

His New York area show ran from 1950 to 1993 and was famous for its eclectic range of guests, featuring everyone from Marilyn Monroe to a man famous for being able to whistle through his nose.

He was gifted the glove by Babe Ruth's widow, Claire, who he interviewed on his show in 1968.

Franklin commented: "Claire herself inadvertently impressed upon me the rarity of this glove when she mentioned to me how few of her late husband's baseball-related possessions she had.

"Ruth apparently had left the bulk of his baseball 'memorabilia' to the executors of his estate. But as I can well attest, there was very little in the late 1940s which resembled today's avid public interest in collecting memorabilia or nostalgia."

Another glove worn by Ruth during his high-school baseball days is expected to sell for $1m at Goldin Auctions.

The sale also included a leather jacket belonging to Marlon Brando, which made $22,000. Brando appeared on the show in 1965.
