Blackhawks Stanley Cup banner to auction in the US

The original 1961 Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup championship banner, which previously hung in the hockey team's (now-demolished) Chicago Stadium, is to sell at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers on July 6.

The sought after banner was
last offered in 1994

The banner, which commemorates the Blackhawks' 1961 victory against rivals the Detroit Red Wings - the team's first Cup win for more than 29 years - previously auctioned in 1994, after the demolition of the dilapidated stadium took place.

The banner drew considerable bids, eventually selling to restaurant owner Gus Cappas for $15,000. It has hung in Cappas' restaurant ever since.

Ice hockey memorabilia is a boom market. In November 2012, a banner celebrating the Toronto Maple Leafs' 1967 Stanley Cup victory sold for $34,000, while Wayne Gretzky's 500th goal game-worn jersey made $297,997 (excluding buyer's premium) in June 2013.
