Dave Keon Maple Leafs jersey sells for $52,500

A Toronto Maple Leafs jersey worn by the legendary defensive-forward Dave Keon has sold for $52,360.

The piece was the star of an auction of historical Canadian hockey memorabilia at Classic Auctions on February 23.

Dave Keon jersey
Dave Keon played 15 seasons for the Toronto Maple Leafs

Keon played professionally between 1961 and 1982, spending the longest portion of his career (15 seasons) with the Maple Leafs.

He is often referred to as the team's greatest player. This jersey dates to his 1961 rookie season and has been fully authenticated.

The auction house explains: "A Dec 23rd Weekend Magazine full page photo from 1961 that will be included shows Keon wearing this jersey, with exact matches to the hand-embroidered details on the right side leaf of the Leafs' team crest, along with the tips on the left side of the crest, and other areas, that have folded in a similar pattern.

"Keon's 1961 York peanut butter hockey card also exhibits hand-embroidered details at the top of the team crest that perfectly match-up.

"With all of the team crest's hand-embroidered details unique, they provide bullet-proof photo-matches.

"From arguably the greatest Maple Leaf of all-time, this Dave Keon rookie sweater is definitely worthy of display in the Hall of Fame."
