'Dream Team' Olympic basketball sells for $230,000

A basketball used during the 1992 Olympic final, signed by the US' "Dream Team" squad, has auctioned.

Featuring the names of NBA greats such as Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Charles Barkley, the ball sold for $230,041 at SCP Auctions last night.

The 1992 Barcelona Olympics was the first time professional players participated in the basketball competition. The US' "Dream Team" - so called for their stunning roster - were untouchable, and comfortably won the final over Croatia by 117-85.

SCP called it "arguably the most important game-used basketball ever to hit the market", which explains its strong showing.

The auction also featured the $138,000 sale of Ernie Banks' Chicago Cubs jersey.
