Gretzky game-worn jersey auctions for $298,000

Canadian hockey star Wayne Gretzky's most significant game-worn jersey has auctioned for $297,995 in the US, excluding buyer's premium.

The sale price represents an impressive 1091% increase on the jersey's $25,000 reserve.

The Great One’s jersey is connected to two important career milestones: his 500th goal and the Edmonton Oilers’ 1987 Stanley Cup victory

Gretzky not only wore the gamer in 1986, on the momentous night he scored his 500th goal and became the 13th member of the NHL's elite 500-goal club, but also later that season in 1987, when his Edmonton Oilers team won the Stanley Cup against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Offered from hockey super-fan Shawn Chaulk's extensive collection (Chaulk has previously likened the addictive qualities of collecting sports memorabilia to those of smoking crack cocaine), the jersey is among the most important pieces of Gretzky memorabilia to ever grace the auction block.

Before the sale, Chaulk told local newspaper Fort McMurray Today that 500 goals "is one of the most exclusive mile stone clubs there is in the NHL.

"But Wayne also kept wearing that jersey and was wearing it the night they won the Stanley Cup as well. So it's one jersey with multiple milestone events tied to it."

The Great One's 500th goal-worn skates also starred as part of Classic Auctions' online sale of Gretzky memorabilia. The heavily battered and scuffed Daoust ice skates brought $19,489, while the 500th goal puck made $22,413.

We have a raft of sports memorabilia in stock, including items relating to the careers of football legends and boxing superstars.
