Mystery 2012 Olympics medal set to beat $30,000

A mystery London 2012 Olympics gold medal is expected to make in excess of $30,000.

It's set to star in RR Auction's dedicated July 21 Olympic Games sale.

The medal is one of the first from the 2012 Games to come to auction

The consignor of the lot will remain anonymous, with only the sport they competed in to be revealed to the winning bidder after the sale.

The auction house comments: "Any winner's medals from more recent Olympic Games are extremely scarce and this is one of the very first London 2012 gold medals to be publicly offered."

The lot, designed by David Watkins, features an image of a winged Nike below the legend "XXX LONDON OLYMPIAD 2012".

It retains its original purple strap and aside from a couple of marks is in very good condition.

A spokesperson for the auction house told the Daily Mail: "It's not rare for athletes from around the world to face financial hardship depending on what events they're in."

In the past Olympic medals have sold for enormous sums.

A gold Jesse Owens received at the 1936 Games in Berlin realised a world record $1.4m at SCP Auctions in 2013.

A very rare Oslo 1952 Winter Olympics torch will also feature with an estimate in excess of $75,000.
