Ortiz's World Series beard nets $11,000 in charity eBay auction

Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz has auctioned his World Series beard for charity on eBay, in an effort to raise money for Movember.

'Big Papi' is a nine-time All-Star and three-time World Series champion

Raising awareness for testicular and prostate cancer, the "beard ball" and razor sold for $10,877. Shane Victorino's trimmings, along with his razor and autograph, made $3,750.

According to Boston first baseman Mike Napoli, the club's beard growing frenzy this year started in spring training with just a few players, but soon caught on.

"Me, Jonny (Gomes) and (Dustin) Pedroia were just messing around, saying we were going to grow it out all year. And it just seemed like everyone jumped on," he told USA Today.

Collectible celebrity hair is a growing market. In 1997, one collector paid $6,900 for a clump of Mickey Mantle's hair, while strands of Ted Williams' hair sold for $780.

John F Kennedy's hair made an impressive $1,800 in October, while Mick Jagger's hair sold for $6,075 in July.
