Pete Sampras' US Open-winning racquet is selling

A racquet Pete Sampras used in winning his first grand slam tennis title is selling at auction.

Sampras wielded the Wilson Pro Staff as he won the 1990 US Open final in straight sets against Andre Agassi. That made Pistol Pete the youngest winner of the tournament, at 19 years and 28 days.

The tournament was a changing of the guard. Sampras defeated former champions Ivan Lendl and John McEnroe on the way to the title.

Sampras would go on to win 13 more grand slams, finishing with another victory at the US Open against old adversary Agassi in 2002.

Sampras used Wilson Pro Staffs throughout his career, doing much to advance the racquet's popularity.

The graphite Kevlar racquet, which Sampras has signed on the handle, shows plenty of wear. It last sold at a charity auction in the months following Sampras' win.

With 23 days left of the Steiner Sports sale, bidding stands at $2,500.

We're expecting that price to go much higher, such is the importance sports collectors place on the "first" victory of a star's career.

A shirt Andy Murray wore in winning his first grand slam title, the 2012 US Open, sold for $13,500 that same year.

The May 6-ending Spring Fever auction also features a signed and framed tennis ball from three-time grand slam champion Lindsay Davenport. It has a $225 minimum bid.

A tennis ball signed by champions Billie Jean King and Tracy Austin has a $75 opening price.
