Ruth-Capone signed baseball auctions online for $62,000

A baseball signed by two of the most famous men in America during the 1920s, Babe Ruth and Al Capone, sold as part of an online sports memorabilia auction that closed on February 2.

The twice-signed ball brought $61,863. The impressive sale price is testament to the piece's flawless provenance as well as the enduring popularity of items associated with Ruth and Capone. The item carried a $25,000 minimum bid.

The ball's consignor, Pete Collins, is the grandson of baseball player Herb Pennock, who acquired the signatures circa 1931. Collins told the Chicago Sun-Times before the sale: "I was a huge 'Untouchables' fan with Eliot Ness, I always liked the bad guys. I saw this ball and I fawned over it so much my grandmother made sure it was mine."

Here at Paul Fraser Collectibles we also have a wide range of sports memorabilia in stock.
