Snead's 1949 Masters trophy valued at $100,000

The 1949 Masters trophy awarded to Sam Snead (1912-2002) will lead a sale of golfing memorabilia at Heritage Auctions in Dallas on December 6-7.

The trophy, which carries a valuation of $100,000, was presented to Snead for his performance at the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia.

He scored 67s in the final two rounds to beat challengers Johnny Bulla and Lloyd Mangrum by a three-stroke margin.

The Masters trophies did not exist at the time of Snead's victory - they were produced a number of decades later and presented retroactively.

Comprised of a replica of Augusta's famous clubhouse, the trophy is engraved: "Masters Tournament, Augusta National Golf Club, 1949 Sam Snead 282."

A recent sale at Heritage saw a trophy presented to Snead for his 1946 Open victory realise $263,000.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest golfers to have ever lived, Snead won a record-breaking 82 PGA events including seven majors.

A 1946 Open gold medal, won by Snead at St Andrews, is valued at $40,000.

The medal is presented along with a letter of provenance from Snead.

We have a range of golfing memorabilia available here, including this PGA Tour cap autographed by Tiger Woods - the only player to have come close to Snead's PGA record.
