T206 Joe Doyle error card sells for $160,000

A rare T206 Joe Doyle error card has sold for $160,000.

The lot was the highlight of MBA Auctions' August 18 sale of sports and historical memorabilia in Seattle.

Joe Doyle Error
The error lists pitcher Joe Doyle as playing in the wrong league

The card, one of the rarest in the entire T206 series, lists pitcher Doyle as playing for New York in the National League - when in fact he played in the American League.

Grant Zahajko, a spokesperson for the auction house, said: "Once the error was discovered they pulled the (printing) plate, chipped off the 'National' part, put the plate back on and continued making what experts believe was 99.9 percent of the run.

"The card wasn't even known to the hobby until the 1990s after a collector named Larry Fritsch discovered it, and then he didn't tell anybody about the discovery for a while.

"I think he got his hands on three or four of them before it became public that there was an error-card variation."

It's one of around 12 known to exist and is graded PSA 2. This make it one of the lesser specimens on the market.

By contrast, a PSA 3 graded example made $414,750 in 2012, which indicates the value collectors place on condition.
