With the other known uniform "locked away in a vault-like collection", collectors were desperate to own the example at auction, with the winning bid coming in at $137,274.

Ted Williams (1918-2002) was one of the greatest hitters in baseball history, ending his career with a .344 batting average, 521 home runs and a .482 on-base percentage - the highest ever recorded. He spent the entirety of his playing life with the Boston Red Sox.

The uniform was worn by Williams in the 1954-1955 season with a black armband in remembrance of "The Golden Greek" Harry Aganis, a Boston Red Sox player who passed away aged 26.

Both the shirt - which is one of the two finest Williams shirts known - and pants are autographed by the star, which is something of a rarity as Williams refused to sign anything after around 1980.

The uniform was first auctioned at Wolffer's Auctions in 1993, when it was bought by the current vendor. With many of Williams' best memorabilia locked away in museums, it could be a long time before collectors are given the opportunity to bid on a uniform of this quality again.
