Unique Honus Wagner postcard selling for $5,500 with Lelands

A unique baseball postcard starring Honus Wagner, the legendary player featured on the world's most valuable baseball card, is selling at $5,706 with Lelands.

Honus Wagner postcard
There were just 14 Rose postcards known with the Greenfields overprint until this unique Honus Wagner example was discovered

The postcard originates from what Lelands describes as the "most visually attractive set of all", the 1908 PC760 Rose postcards, but features a Greenfield's Delatour Chocolates advertisement overprinted on the reverse.

Previously, only 14 postcards from the Rose set were known to have been overprinted by Greenfields, with this example bringing the tally to 15 with the bonus that it stars Honus Wagner.

At the time, Honus Wagner was leading the Pittsburg Pirates to the World Series and was one of the greatest players in the league.

The T206 Honus Wagner baseball card is one of the rarest, and most valuable, in the world, after he refused to allow production as he did not want children to buy cigarettes to obtain his card. One example set a record for a baseball card at $2.1m at Goldin Auctions in 2013.

The auction house notes that a Honus Wagner Rose postcard without the Greenfield's advertising on the reverse recently sold for over $20,000.

Also selling in the auction are Shoeless Joe Jackson's personal scrapbooks, which shed light on his fascinating career, including the famous 1919 Black Sox Scandal.

The sale ends January 16.
