An 18th century gentleman's three-piece suit has auctioned for £8,750 ($13,400) at Bonhams this afternoon (July 25), bringing an impressive 438% increase on its £1,500 top estimate.

The pickled beetroot-coloured suit features a long-sleeved, silk-lined frock coat, matching waistcoat and fall front breeches.
A silk and satin brocade open robe also put in a strong performance, making £4,000 ($6,123), while an unusual woven silk girdle dated 1698 sold for £6,250 ($9,566) - a 317% increase on its £1,500 presale valuation.
Antique lace also proved popular among collectors: a delicate 16th century cloth of drawn thread work depicting mythological animals sold for £1,250 ($1,912), and a diminutive black lace cap made £1,375 ($2,104).

A large group of 19th century gentlemen's shirts, handkerchiefs and nightshirts also auctioned for £1,125 ($1,721).
Vintage and antique clothing is increasingly sought after. In June 2013, a Chanel cocktail dress from the 1950s brought £17,000 ($26,118) to Kerry Taylor Auctions - a 1,317% increase on its £1,200 estimate.
However, celebrity worn attire is generally worth a great deal more than civilian-worn items.
In March 2013, Princess Diana's dresses crossed the auction block. The top selling gown, a sweeping Victor Edelstein designed number, sold for £240,000 ($362,563).
