Germania Exchange mechanical bank doubles estimate

A J & E Stevens Germania Exchange cast iron mechanical bank recently sold for $51,000 at Bertoia Auctions.

Goat bank Bertoia

The bank displays a goat holding a beer mug

That’s double its $25,000 estimate.

The rare 19th century piece was discovered in the attic of a home in Virginia.

It depicts a goat sitting atop a barrel. When a coin is deposited in the slot, the goat stands up and offers the depositor a mug of beer.

Very little is known about this particular variation, including the dates of production. Only a few exist.
