Jose Reyes's dreadlock hair snags $10,200 price in eBay charity auction

Baseball has created some great collectibles and memorabilia over the years.

Babe Ruth's first Hillerich & Bradsby bat sold for $537,750 in September 2009 whilst his Louisville Slugger bat sold at Sotheby's for $1.26m at the end of 2004.

Amongst collecting cards, an example of the extremely rare Honus Wagner card sold for $262,000 in 2010 - not for the benefit of a lifetime collector but for that of a group of Baltimore nuns to whom it was donated.

Whilst not perhaps in the league of these legends at this time, shortstop player Jose Reyes has made something of a name for himself in the game, and this has been confirmed by his transfer from the New York Mets to the Miami Marlins in a six-year deal worth $106m.

However, the move had a cost to Reyes, as the Marlins have a particular style and dress code. As you might guess, this particularly affected the player's hair.

Following the likes of Elvis, Reyes turned the haircut into an event, having his dreadlocks sheared off on national television. They were then put up for sale on online auction site eBay.

The final bid was quite impressive, albeit just shy of a ten-thousandth part of the star's deal at $10,200.

The proceeds will benefit the Make a Wish foundation. The collector who has gained the precious locks remains anonymous.

Impressive though it is, the total for the hair did not make it one of the greatest hair sales of all time. By coincidence we just compiled a list of some of our favourites for our newsletter.
