Original Winston Churchill sketch sells for $17,500 online

A compelling original sketch from Winston Churchill has sold with excellent results in an online auction which closed yesterday (September 19).

Original Winston Churchill sketch the losing side
An ironic title given Churchill's future achievements

Considered to be the earliest known artwork from the former British prime minister, Churchill created the piece when he was just 18 years old. Entitled "The Losing Side" and showing a boxer splayed in the corner of the ring, the work is decidedly ironic given his future achievements.

Signed "Winston S Churchill-/92", the young leader gifted the sketch to the owners of a sweet shop near Harrow School, which he attended, and it has remained with their family until last night's sale. With a minimum bid of just $500 set by the auction, the piece soared to $17,511.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a fascinating signed letter from Winston Churchill currently available.

Also featuring among the highest selling items in the sale was a signed military discharge from George Washington. Dated July 10, 1783, the document shows Washington discharging a wounded soldier from service in the last days of the American war of independence.

These were also the last months Washington would spend as the commander in chief of the United States armies, after he famously resigned his commission on December 23, 1783.  An important piece in the soon-to-be president's history, the discharge sold for $13,155, despite having major restoration work and scattered toning and soiling.

Our sister company, PFC Auctions, is currently offering a fantastic George Washing item for collectors. Mounted with a classic portrait of the US leader is an authentic lock of his hair, a piece of his coat and an original signature.
