Pennsylvania toy auction nets $700k

The auction of Mark Solondz's toy collection (which we reported on) has concluded with high prices for some of the best items.

As expected, some of the biggest sales were robots. The 15 inch tall Tin Target Robot mentioned (and pictured) in our last article easily beat its $2,000-4,000 estimate to sell for $5,265, as did its fellow Non-Stop, or Lavender, Robot.

A near-mint Tin Radicon Robot beats both of those being taken home for $7,605. The toy can be controlled with a remote control and not only swings its arms, rotates its ears and illuminates its head, it produces sparks from its chest.

Even this was beaten by a boxed, near-mint X-27 Explorer Robot. The 9 inch friction powered space traveller is very rare and collectible, and sold for $8,775.

The top sale from the monster category was a boxed Japanese Godzilla-style monster, which sold for a stunning $9,800.

The greatest sale of all, however was for a small, boxed, friction-powered space explorer Super Jetter prototype Race Car Toycar which doubled  its expected price of $4,000-6,000 to go under the hammer for $11,000. It is thought to be one of a kind.

Many people underestimate the value of classic toys and games. Recently an £11,000 ($18,400) chess set was amongst several highly valued items in a British board games auction.
