Unique 'Kelly Tires' advert tin sells for $13k

Vintage advertising antiques can make great collectibles, as demonstrated by some of the unusual lots sold at Dan Morphy's February auction in Pennsylvania.

Don't tell Shirley... Hollywood legend
Temple's likeness was used in the ad

Hot on the heels of that sale, another rare and historic advertising artefact emerged on the market: this double-sided tin sign for Kelly Tires.

Measuring 24 inches in diameter and showing a lady waving while driving, the sign sold at a Spring Petroliana & Advertising Auction held by Matthews Auctions, LLC.

The sign emerged as the top-earner in the March 5 auction, realising a final hammer price of $13,200.

Prior to its sale, the vintage sign was apparently rated 8.9 on a scale of 1-10 for condition, on both of its sides, and boasts super color and shine.

It is also claimed that the lady featured on the sign was based on none-other than Hollywood icon Shirley Temple, who never actually permitted her likeness to be used.

Dan Morphy's February auction included a tobacco advertising bronze Red Indian figurine (sold for $15,525) and a mechanical 'Bread Winner's' bank toy from 1937 (sold for $28,750).
