Wills-Kate's wedding cake sets $3,000 world record

A slice of cake from the royal wedding of Wills and Kate has sold for £1,917 at PFC Auctions in the UK.

It is the first slice of cake from the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton to come up for sale, setting the benchmark for a slice from the April 2011 nuptials.

The Fiona Cairns-designed fruit cake, which was wrapped in its original greaseproof paper, came in a 5.5 inch-long presentation tin and accompanying compliments slip from Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.

Kylie Whitehead of PFC Auctions commented: "Here's proof, if it were needed, of the power of the British royal family at auction.

"The cake offered a tantalising glimpse, and taste, of arguably the most celebrated wedding of all time, which made it irresistible to bidders - what a superb start to the Jubilee celebrations".

Accompanying the lot was an original order of service from the ceremony at Westminster Abbey. Its 16 pages included vows, hymns, prayers and a blessing.

The wedding was watched by 2.24bn people around the world.

The May 24 online auction also featured a piece of cake from Charles and Diana's wedding in 1981, which sold for £1,756 - a new world record.
