£468,000 diamond pendant dazzles at Bonhams

Bonhams completed its first Fine Jewellery sale of the year yesterday (April 21) in London with a satisfying sales total of £2.2m.

This year has a lot to live up to, as 2009 saw Bonhams Jewellery Department have their most successful year ever. But the sale was a clear success, mostly thanks to four valuable lots:

Firstly, a diamond single-stone ring weighing 5.03 carats, internally flawless, was sold for £80,400 beating its estimate of £55,000-65,000.

Two brilliant-cut diamond single-stone rings weighing 5.01 carats and 4.74 carats were fought over ferociously, eventually selling for £222,000 each. They had attracted pre-sale estimates of £80,000-100,000 and £100,000-150,000 respectively.

But the best was saved 'til last, as the 135th and final lot, a highly collectible 14.6 carat pear-shaped diamond pendant, brought a remarkable £468,000 against a pre-sale estimate of £200,000-300,000.

Jean Ghika, Bonhams UK Jewellery Director, commented: "We are delighted with the results which demonstrate that the market for diamonds of exceptional quality is undiminished.

"The result for lot 135 rivals some of the highest prices ever paid for a very light pink diamond over 10.00 carats at auction."
