Confirmed: Elizabeth Taylor's jewellery collection will be sold by Christie's

Christie's has confirmed what was has been widely believed since shortly after Liz Taylor's death: that it is to sell her famed jewellery collection.

As yet, details remain sketchy. All we know is that the auctioneer has reached some kind of agreement with the family to sell most or all of her jewellery as well as a significant part of her art collection and some other memorabilia, such as some fine dresses.

Christie's will begin to provide the details of the series of auctions planned (predictably not just one) later in the spring. The details about who will benefit from the proceeds have not yet been detailed either.

Taylor hasn't been out of the news since her death was announced.

Not only are her love letters to be sold, but extracts from her diaries are reported to tell of the hatred she incurred from President John F Kennedy's wife Jackie (whose autograph we've sold), as the latter believed Taylor to have had an affair with JFK.

Elizabeth Taylor certainly had a more complex love life than her earliest love letters suggest she intended, and Kennedy was rumoured to have indulged in affairs, notably with another great beauty of the silver screen, Marilyn Monroe.

Nevertheless Taylor strenuously denied the claim. Her diaries, which she kept from an early age, are to be published in an edited form, and are reported to include many revelations. It is not clear what will happen to the originals which would of course be extremely valuable in their own right.
