Don't cry... Evita Peron's brooch appears for sale estimated at $25,900

This diamond and aquamarine brooch is already impressive, but its provenance should boost its value even further at Auktionshaus Dr. Fischer's upcoming September 24 sale.

The brooch was owned by none other than Eva Perón (pictured top right), more affectionately known as Evita, the First Lady of Argentina from 1946 until her untimely death from cancer, aged just 33, in 1952.

Evita's passion and charisma won her an undying place in the hearts of Argentineans during her short life, and her legacy continues today as a political and feminist icon.

In 1996, none other than the Queen of Pop Madonna helped cement Perón's standing in popular culture with her award-winning performance in Evita, a film version of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical based on the First Lady's life.

Eva Perón's diamond and aquamarine brooch could bring €18,000

According to Auktionshaus Dr. Fischer's lot notes, this brooch is made from 1940s platinum with an aquamarine stone of approximately 54 grams and 14.29 carats.

Beside the aquamarine gem are 196 diamonds of around 15.3 carats.

While the lot notes make no specific reference as to if and when this necklace was worn by Evita, the striking beautify of the piece means it's likely to have been treasured by her.

Given the affection with which Perón is still held today, by Argentineans in particular, the brooch's pre-sale estimate of €14,000-18,000 (almost $25,900) should prove no obstacle when it sells next month.

Memorabilia items linked to history's powerful political females have already proved themselves on the markets this year. This includes the sale of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's handbag back in June.

Auctioned by former British Conservative party Chairman and amateur auctioneer, Lord Jeffrey Archer, the bag sold for £25,000 ($39,892) at Christie's.

Thatcher - whose autographs are also sought-after among collectors - owned the bag for more than 30 years, including during her time as British Prime Minister.

In fact, it became so synonymous with Thatcher that the late MP Nicholas Ridley is reported to have said prior to a discussion: "Why don't we start? The handbag is here."

Whether Evita's brooch will attract similar attention remains to be seen - watch this space. The action will be held in Heilbronn, Germany.
