Flawless diamond for sale

A fabulous 29.53 carat diamond, set in platinum, is coming up for sale on October 19 in New York.

It is an example of a rare Type IIa diamond. Most diamonds contain certain amount of nitrogen as an impurity, which tends to give them a yellowish discolouration. Type IIa diamonds have so little nitrogen impurity that it cannot be detected by normal methods (ie infra-red or ultra-violet light absorption).

This main diamond is accompanied by two small heart-shaped ones. As a whole it is expected to sell at $1.8-2.2m.

The impressive collection also features pieces credited to Tiffany & Co, Bulgari and Van Cleef and Arples.

The ring (though not the whole of the collection) will be exhibited in Hong Kong, and then be shown briefly in New York before the sale. Whilst unlikely to break the per-carat record for a gemstone at auction achieved by the Star of Josephine (a flawless blue diamond) in May, this is one of the finest pieces available this year.
