George II mahogany clock gleams at Dreweatts

A George II mahogany bracket clock, created around 1750 is set to auction next week at Dreweatts sale of Clocks & Scientific Instruments.

Selling alongside an historic Oxford wall clock made by John Knibb and a George III black japanned tavern clock created by Joseph Gurney, the piece created by Joseph Smith is exquisitely made.

Featuring a six pillar twin fusee movement with trip hour repeat, the piece demonstrates Smith's renowned clock-making skills.

He is generally considered a fine and diverse maker with known examples ranging from eight day longcase clocks with tidal dials to watches with champleve dials.

Dreweatts sale takes place on February 17 in Berkshire, and has viewings taking place today, and on all weekdays next week.
