Major Swatch watch collection auctions for $6m in Hong Kong

A major collection of Swatch watches has sold for $6m at Sotheby's Hong Kong today.

The 5,800-piece lot crossed the block as part of an auction of important watches from the renowned Dunkel Collection, and is the first in a two-part sale.

The collection included rare watches and promotional materials

Sotheby's commented prior to the sale: "Both sales embody the finest craftsmanship of watchmaking and are sure to fulfil discerning collectors' appreciation for technological innovation and aesthetic design.

"The Important Watches sale also features one of the largest Swatch collection in private hands ever known. Comprising over 5,800 elements, featuring exclusive prototypes, limited and special edition Swatch watches from 1983 to 2007, along with collected artwork relating to Swatch designs."

A rare Patek Philippe ref.5207 pink gold minute repeating tourbillon watch was another highlight, realising $614,054.

The lot is a highly desirable timepiece, as Sotheby's explains: "According to our research, only a handful of this 'Grande Complication' are manufactured per year, underlining the exclusivity behind this masterpiece.

"Despite still being listed in Patek Philippe's catalogues, the present reference 5207 is only granted to the most loyal and faithful collectors of the brand."
