Patek Philippe ref 3448 set to sell for $1.5m at Christie's

The stand-out lot of Christie's May 13 Important Watches auction in Geneva is a white gold Patek Philippe, reference 3448, which is thought to be unique.

Patek Philippe ref 3499
No Patek Philippe watches came with a leap year indication before 1982, except ref 3448

The piece forms part of a collection known as "A Gentleman's Pursuit of Excellence Part II", which features 360 historical and rare timepieces. It is estimated at $850,000-1.5m.

Manufactured in 1981, this is likely the first ever Patek Philippe watch to feature a leap year indication, aside from prototype models. Prior to 1982, perpetual calendar wristwatches made by Patek Philippe did not include leap year indications.

The watch has been consigned by the family of its original owner, and has never been seen in public before. It sports an extremely rare white gold case, which enhances the celebrated "padellone" design.

Also starring in the sale is a platinum dress watch from Patek Philippe, boasting perpetual calendar and Moon phases. It is considered one of the world's most beautiful post-war production pocket watches, and is offered in virtually mint, unworn and unpolished condition, warranting an estimate of $270,000-370,000.

The sale will also feature "the most important selection of Rolex vintage wristwatches ever offered in a Christie's auction". Comprising 115 watches overall, the selection will be highlighted by a rare, oversized stainless steel split seconds chronograph wristwatch, ref 4113, which was made in 1942 and will sell with a $1.3m high estimate.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a superb Longines Olympic Series watch for sale.
