The sale totalled an impressive $3.4m, with strong demand for rare Burgundy bottles and the classic Bordeaux vintages. The two magnums of the 1988 Burgundy sold for $39,360.

Californian wines also fared well, with seven half-cases of the Harlan Estate Red from Napa Valley selling for $29,250. Four three-bottle losts of Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 followed, each making $6,765.

"California's been very healthy recently," Acker's CEO John Kapon told Bloomberg. "It has its loyal and devoted collectors."
